Be The Light | Devotional Entry
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” — Matthew 5:14-16
One day, a while ago, I visited a sporting goods store to purchase a new pair of running shoes. As I finished up my shopping and walked toward the register, I could already tell that the young woman working there was either having a rough day or nearing the end of a long shift.
Her body language told a story that her mouth didn’t need to. She was slightly slouched over the register, barely looked at us, and waved us over with a tired, “Next.” As we approached, I said, “Hi, how are you? I love your nose ring, it’s so cute.”
Almost immediately, her expression changed. She smiled and said, “Thank you so much, I just got it recently.”I smiled back and said, “Very nice.”
That little moment could have gone in an entirely different direction. I could’ve matched her energy, responded with frustration, or mirrored her mood. But instead, I chose kindness.
As followers of Christ, we’re called to be a light in the world. To take the higher road, even when it’s hard. To reflect Jesus not just in our beliefs, but in our everyday interactions.
I’m far from perfect at this. But I try. And that day, I saw the difference it made.
